Our Founder

William Larimer Mellon and a group of Pittsburghers founded Gulf Oil Corporation in 1907. In April 1931 he was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Executive Committee for Gulf. He held this position until his retirement in 1948. Mr. Mellon served on the board of trustees for the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1938 to 1949. In 1939 he established the W.L. and May T. Mellon Foundation. The Foundation donated $6 million to the Carnegie Institute of Technology to establish the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now the Tepper School of Business) in January 1949. Unfortunately, W.L. Mellon passed away in October 1949, before the first formal classes began at the school in the fall of 1950.
