New Students

SABA is currently working on developing a welcome package to assist new students in becoming accustomed to life in Pittsburgh. This package will provide students new to Pittsburgh will valuable information about things needed to live in Pittsburgh and how to go about getting them.

In the meanwhile, here are some of the guidelines:

Insurance: Insurance will be automatically done for you as an international student. Just don’t worry about it. The college insurance is cheap and convenient.

Things to bring to Pittsburgh:

  1. Necessary medicine supplies
  2. Two suits (Black and Gray/ Navy Blue)
  3. Cooker/ Other utensils (which you think are absolutely necessary)
  4. Spices/ pickles etc. (Must be sealed)
  5. Plenty of formal shirts/ pants/ formal shoes
  6. Sweaters and warm clothes

Loans: You need a US co-signer, who is a resident or someone with over 3 years Credit history, or, if you have more than 3 years of credit history, you can take a loan. Some people, like me, took loan from an Indian bank. The interest rates of Indian loan are much higher (12%) compared to US (Around 5%).

Preparation: Don’t bother much, just make sure you are well rested and relaxed when you come here. If you want to study something, go to http://www.investopedia.com or search for accounting or finance tutorials on web. You can also use: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~adamodar/

Housing: Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are two nice areas for renting apartments, you can find a studio or 1 Bed room for around USD 600 per month or share a two bed room for around USD 400 per month.
