Engineering/MBA 5 Year Integrated Program

This page is designed to provide information regarding the Bachelor of Science Engineering and the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) 5 year Integrated Program at Carnegie Mellon University. Please read the information below for program and application information. Overview and Admissions Process

1) The program is truly an integrated 5 year program, distinctive from any other 3/2 MBA programs offered at CMU.
2) Students take their normal engineering program through their first 6 semesters.
3) The remaining 4 semesters consist of 12 units of engineering courses and 48 units of MBA courses per semester.
4) Students select some of the MBA electives to satisfy the CIT general education requirements.
5) Students should take internships during the summers after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of the program (refer to chart below).

Eligibility

1) Eligibility is determined by the CIT Dean’s Office.
2) Third year undergraduate students in the following engineering majors are eligible to apply: Chemical, Civil and Environmental, Electrical and Computer, Materials Science, and Mechanical Engineering.
3) Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of the Fall of their third year.


To Apply

The completed application (all components) is due by January 31st of a student’s third year. Applicants must take the GMAT by the end of January and will be contacted to arrange their interview with the MBA Admissions Office in early February. Candidates will be notified of their status by the end of March.


Application Requirements

1) Application Form (available via the MBA Admissions website).
2) Essays (3)
3) GMAT score
4) Resume and work history (including any previous internship experiences).
5) Letters of Evaluation (2 are required - likely sources would be any internship supervisors or those that may have supervised campus or community activities in which you participated).
6) An interview with an MBA Admissions staff member.
7) Verification of eligibility by the CIT Dean’s Office (taken care of by the Masters Admissions Staff).
8) No application fee (waived for Carnegie Mellon students and alums).


Admissions Criteria

1) Strong rationale for applying to the program.
2) Demonstrated potential for academic success in the MBA program.
3) Potential for professional success.
4) Personal qualities such as:  maturity, leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.


Suggestions for Enhancing Your Application

1) Strengthen your academic record.
2) Get involved on campus and in the community.
3) Find ways to develop your leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
4) Seek company internships.
5) Explore your career options, and then develop specific goals.
6) Prepare for the GMAT.


Financial Considerations

1) All 3/2 students pay full-time MBA tuition in years 4 and 5 to the Tepper School of Business.
2) The Financial Aid Office at the Tepper School of Business, together with Enrollment Services, will determine eligibility and process all aid.
3) All graduate students (years 4 & 5) are considered to be independent and most undergraduate scholarships will apply only for year.
4) There is a tuition requirement in order to graduate with the MBA degree: you are responsible for four semesters (eight mini-semesters) of tuition - even if you should finish the coursework early. You will not receive the degree without paying for all four semesters of tuition.
5) Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office with all financial aid questions and concerns.
