Are there math prerequisites for the Tepper MBA program?

Yes, we do have two math prerequisites: calc I and either calc II or statistics.

Do math prerequisites have to be completed before applying to Tepper?

No. We do offer provisional admission to candidates without the necessary prerequisite courses. However, prerequisite courses must be completed before a student begins classes in the fall.

Should I take math coursework now?

Taking either a calculus or statistics course is a great way to brush up on your math skills as well as show the admissions committee that you are proactively preparing for your studies.

What math courses fulfill the prerequisite requirement?

We typically look for at least a 3-credit course from an accredited college or university. Students often complete their courses at community colleges or online programs.

Are others admitted with admissions provisions?

Yes. Approximately 15-20% of admitted students are admitted provisionally based on their success in a math course or participation in Math Skills Review (MSW) as part of Basecamp.  Please note that when we grant admissions decisions, we are very confident of your potential for success at Carnegie Mellon.  Admissions provisions are made in the interest of ensuring a smooth transition into our MBA program with the goal of optimizing your academic success.

Will I be able to keep up with the engineers in class?

At the Tepper School, we are committed to ensuring the success of all of our students. We offer several ways to strengthen your quantitative skills before and during the program. Before the program begins, we offer a Math Skills Review (MSW) Program as part of Basecamp. Approximately 80% of our students participate in MSW each year. During the year, we offer tutoring and recitation sessions to ensure student success. Also, our professors are very accessible, and are always willing to help students. Finally, because we have a strong community, students are also committed to helping each other. Study groups include engineers, marketers, and even philosophers. Students share their strengths and improve upon their weaknesses.

How can I strengthen my quant skills before entering the program?

We offer a Math Skills Review (MSW) as part of Basecamp for students who would like a review before classes begin. MSW is a very popular - In fact, approximately 80% of students participate in MSW each year.

Will there be other students with a non-technical background?

Yes. In a typical year, approximately 50% of Tepper MBAs come from a non-technical or liberal arts backgrounds.
