Called Pittsburgh’s Little Italy, Bloomfield is located 1.8 miles from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon and 3.5 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh.

Bloomfield is a working-class community with an urban feel. Here, old mingles with new. Narrow streets and row houses radiate outward from the central business district and newer construction on Liberty Avenue. Classic drug and hardware stores flourish alongside newer art galleries (Boxheart) and tattoo parlors (Tattoo Noir). And the neighborhood’s traditions are celebrated with the same vigor as its recent accomplishments.

Today, Bloomfield is popular with college students and health professionals. (The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Shadyside Hospital are all located within one mile of Bloomfield.) And while the majority of parking is on-street, the neighborhood does offer residents easy access to the city’s public transportation.

Known for its large Italian immigrant population, Bloomfield has also been home to German, Irish, Polish, and other ethnic groups since the late 1700s. Bloomfield’s restaurants offer residents and visitors a taste of this rich heritage. Italy’s pastas and sausages can be found at Groceria Italiana and Donatelli’s Italian Food. The Bloomfield Bridge Tavern features Polish haluski and pierogies. And Nico’s Recovery Room serves Greek specialties. The neighborhood also has several coffee shops (Crazy Mocha), bakeries (Paddy Cake), grocery stores, and pizza parlors.
