Commencement Ceremony Details and Important Information

This is certainly an exciting time in your life at Carnegie Mellon University.

Please be sure to download the Commencement 2013 Information Packet (pdf) and share this information with your family and friends. This packet contains all of your required information for graduation including the calendar of events, degree requirements, commencement ceremony instructions, and alumni resources.

If anyone has a guest with special needs (e.g., wheelchair accessibility, access to an ASL interpreter, etc.), please visit the University's commencement webpage for information about the main ceremony. For information about our diploma ceremony, please e-mail our program office.

How is Your Name Pronounced?

During the commencement ceremony, your name will be read aloud, and you will then walk across the stage to shake hands with the Dean, Prof. Epple, and myself.  At this time, your photograph will also be taken.  

Please visit the pronounciation website, and fill out your preferred name, pronounciation, etc.


Call for UEP Diploma Ceremony Student Speaker

The Spring term brings with it the excitement of your upcoming graduation on May 19th. With graduation comes the opportunity for you to represent your class as the student speaker at the joint UBA and UEP diploma ceremony to be held at the Soldiers and Sailors Hall in Oakland.

Click here for  a document outlining the speaker selection process, characteristics of a successful speech, and things to consider when writing your speech.  Note that the deadline for submitting your application has been extended to Tuesday, March 19th at 5:00 p.m.

Carnegie Mellon University Commencement Website goes live.

Cap and Gown Order Website goes live.

Degree candidates and participating faculty must wear caps and gowns at the main commencement ceremony, diploma ceremonies, the Phi Beta Kappa initiation ceremony and the Doctor's Hooding Ceremony. Cap and gown orders are now being accepted.

Tepper Senior Commencement Speaker Application Form is distributed online.

March 19, 2013 (Tuesday)

Tepper Senior Commencement Speaker Application is due at 5:00 p.m.

Distribution of Caps and Gowns in the U.C.

May 16, 2013 (Thursday)

Economics Faculty-Student Luncheon at noon in the Tepper Front Lobby. Please join us for a casual lunch (i.e, go ahead and wear jeans).

Tepper Undergraduate Community Senior Wine Tasting Reception. Please join the Tepper Faculty (Undergraduate Program Area and Courtyard, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.).  The dress code is cocktail attire. Identification is required for all students.

May 17, 2013 (Friday)

CMU Senior Leadership Awards Recognition Ceremony (by invitation only).

Last day to release financial holds to receive diplomas at Commencement

 

 

May 18, 2013 (Saturday)

Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society Welcome Breakfast and Initiation Ceremony takes place from 7:00-9:00 a.m. The breakfast takes place in the Conan Room (UC) at 7:00 a.m.  The ceremony begins at 8:00 a.m. in McConomy Auditorium (UC). Cap and Gown are required for this ceremony

Undergraduate Economics seniors receiving honors will be recognized at the Dietrich College Honors Ceremony. All students earning university honors, college honors, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and/or Omicron Delta are invited with their families for this celebration which begins promptly at 10:00 a.m..  Location: University Center, Rangos 2.

May 19, 2013 (Sunday)

University Commencement Ceremony Begins at 11:00 a.m. in Gesling Stadium.  See “Commencement Ceremony Instructions for Graduating Seniors” for details.

Refreshments available for graduates, families, and friends from noon – 1:45 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Hall

Tepper undergraduate diploma ceremony for Undergraduate Economics Program and Undergraduate Business Administration begins at 2:00 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Hall.   Economics and Statistics seniors have the option of participating in the Economics or in the Statistics Department ceremonies.

May 20, 2013 (Monday)

Casual lunch at PHI Bar for graduates and parents who are in Pittsburgh.

May 22, 2013 (Wednesday)

Final Senior Survey (administered by Zoomerang) is Due at Noon.
