Qualified undergraduate economics majors have the opportunity to apply to the accelerated master's degree programs on campus. These programs enable exceptional students to earn both an undergraduate degree and a master degree in five years. The Heinz School of Public Policy and Management offers two professional accelerated master's degree programs: a M.S.P.P.M. (Master of Science in Public Policy and Management) Accelerated Masters Program and a M.I.S.M. (Master of Information Systems Management). The Tepper School of Business offers one academic accelerated masters degree, a M.S.Q.E. (Master of Science in Quantitative Economics), and one professional masters degree, a M.B.A (Master in Business Administration). These programs are available only to current Carnegie Mellon students. Interested students should consult with their economics advisor at the beginning of their sophomore years. Students apply to AMPs during their junior year.
"The M.S.P.P.M. is a professional degree. Most students come here with the purpose of pursuing professional careers immediately following graduation. To that end, our education balances both the theoretical knowledge and the applied methods. We teach you the best of policy and management theory expect our graduates to think deeply and creatively about fundamental issues. But we want our to be “doers,” not just thinkers, so we also provide you a host of opportunities to apply new knowledge simulated — and sometimes actual — management settings. These include group and individual internships, and for some of you, year-long fellowships in regional or national organizations." (M.S.P.P.M.: 2006-2007 Handbook for the Two-Year Track, p. 39)
"The Master of Information Systems Management degree program is designed for individuals who have demonstrated an ability to synthesize complex quantitative and qualitative concepts. It is a pragmatic, problem-solving oriented program that combines information technology practices with business practices. MISM is not a ‘teched-up' MBA." (Masters Programs in Information Systme Management homepage)
"The focus of the full-time and part-time Tepper MBA experience is the development of exceptional leadership skills that accelerate and support career success across industries, functions and management situations. How do we assure you of this academic mandate? The flexibility and depth of options available are designed to provide a specific skill set during critical phases of learning. In other words, the coursework builds and intensifies as students increasingly gain the necessary tools, learning and skills." (The Tepper MBA: Curriculum & Coursework)
"Our fundamental philosophy is quite simple: economists can perform rigorous analyses of fundamental questions, including traditional questions (such as labor supply, social security, educational and tax reform), and newer issues that are central to business management (such as firm decision making with strategic rivalry, incentive contracts and firm organization, auctions and auction design). The last ten years have seen a virtual explosion in our ability to describe such problems in a theoretically coherent manner and then to use modern computational techniques to apply the theory to data. We have world-class faculty and their techniques are becoming the standard toolkit of professional economists. The M.S.Q.E. lets you develop valuable skills that are in high demand."
